16 First clear view of Shasta from the valley of Sacraments Near dog creek. Oct 28th [1874] with exception of [few] narrow combs & [spires] it is one mass of white. Never before [seen]
So white a mtn, The young [snow] must have [turn] somewhat soft with such a mark no amount of fatigue will be felt on [ ] at all against the
17 [ ] prize of beauty & [instruction] be [obtained] from its high [star]. Though all with one [accord]. Indians & whites [regard] the excursion as [absurd] & impossible snow fell as low as 700ft & it must be deep on Shasta nevertheless I must see & [feel] its beauty & learn whence its [ancient] glaciers flowed.
