102 The avg [average] length of, is about from 6 to 8 metres although some [boisterous ] specimens are 10 to 12 & lean spec [specimens] as short as 5 or even 4. They attain full lengths first season nearly & do not change greatly in color until they fall off wh [which] is in about 6 or 7 years The lvs [leaves] at top of any tassel are usually from 1/4 to 1 inch longer than at bot [bottom] The [lvs] of successive yrs [years] are not exactly alike in length

103 (P [Jeff]) Sound of pine trees Hush softly cadenced& with a depth of tone altogether unutterable. No angles [sketch] in delightful curves blended with the bushes the former from the needles the latter from the branches Lvs [leaves] vibrate fast as can count in bottle [brushes ] [sketch] all apart at tips v [very] elastic clash in severe winds & give out a metallic sound. Whole tree when perfect about the shape of corn branches gray with dark rings at intervals of ½ to several inches [marking] [ ] if annual [bird] [scales] This seldom vibrate more than 1/2 in at tip outside are [of] circle [sublending ] angle of 120 degrees Tassels shadowy in centre open & [outside ]
