The discovery of a new [woodpecker] 3 new species of [ ] & a wild grape [vine] wh [which] festooned every ravine & hollow in the most lavish manner made me more than blest I was [glorious] & of course might carry on ere I was aware a [ ]-hauling freight to Yreka into whose good [graces] I committed myself by telling him about [ ] [ ] story directed me to Allens half a m [mile] above here where I was to spend the night & find food etc. just at dusk as hastened with [long] strides
