Trees mostly small oaks of valley nutmeg new element in bank [hearty] groves of beautiful [ ] hundreds along four ms [miles] below Yosem [Yosemite]. One [tissue] of pictures & of [ ] cascades, Rocks domo-[peakular] cleavage about as Yosem [Yosemite] rock in [ ] in a few places. River now at [ ] work of life but with all the beauty & poetry of unmarred nature. Wished to camp in [mid] [of]
stream on smooth flat rock [but] [he] said would have nightmare.
