Saw a great many very fine trees 15 to 25 ft dia [diameter] bulging moderately at the base & holding their dia [diameter] in noble simplicity & symmetry. The Gen [General] Grant is burned near the ground on the E [east] side bulges in huge gnarly waves & crags on the N [north] & W [west]. Its bole above the base 30 or 40 ft is smooth & round

[Other] trees in this grove have more wood in them
The general appearance of the grove is so like that of Mariposa

that one familiar with the [latter] grove can hardly know that this Kings River grove is not the Mariposa.
I could not choose between the two groves, the trees the same in size & gen [general] form, so also the firs & yell [yellow] & Sugar [pine] mingled with them in same proportions.
The underbrush [Cornus] & willow along stream
Rubus, & few ferns etc. on [ ] hillside
