67 the surface of bot [bottom] of val [valley] is oversown with boulders, washed & spread by flood water. The up [upper] end of has a few acres of sandy flats on wh [which] are grouped pines & oaks (Chrysolepis) in most picturesque manner. A small [mirror] lake occupies the extreme head of val [valley] where the river issues from or very narrow & tortuous gorge in cascades so narrow & tortuous that the up [upper] end of val [valley] seems to be completely closed & it is impossible
