The gen effect of the forest is a dark evergreen, light falling thru emerald lvs [leaves], from that calm solitude comes the [murmur] of wind & frisky sqs [squirrels] dart abt JM with young peepin in & out among—now in light next moment in shadow & on every side you hear a low subdued humming of all the busy buzzing creatures whose home & life-work lies lol [between] those rough scales of bark & smooth [solid] bole of the old trees & grasshoppers [ ] [ ] is lavished in every [untrodden] corner of the world.
[Deordars] love dry rocky soil flourish at 9000 ft Camping The delight of picking a place fresh beautiful No [wearisome] [sermons] comfortable commonplace humdrum The escape from every phase of civilized formality all fixed [laws] of action Ever changing scenes new [furniture] in dining room JM every day & meal Suddenly the great heaven is lighted with 10000 gleaming worlds Peaks like white spirits at rest Like some spectral vision a grt shoulder would reveal itself here & a tall pk there looming fitfully thru the mist like [than] phantoms from the spirit world.
