2 Cascades hush & rush from camp outlet of a chain of lakes [Splendid] cascades of Hoff [Hoffman] Lake Range of Clouds back of Hoff [Hoffman] Mtn [Mountain] supplemented range No frost in night!! Wake with noise of wavelets Blankets in stream Deer going up Big Meadows. Although ground still mostly snow covered Wolf Track. Chipmunk at Tuol [Toulomne] Meadows also butterflies & buttercups The big meadows are much flooded look very [dreary] Moraines not much washed because absorb snow as it melts Snow does not slip on ground because I saw last years tracks of sheep & horses unblurred on side hills
3 Noble clouds back of rock—like crisp snow 2nd eve [evening] at mouth of great valley. No sublimer piece of masonry in the mtns [mountains] than the grand beveled wall. Frogs singing purple sunshine on the walls & on the snow making it warm & rosy. A rare camp 700 yds [yards] from river rushing a little stream [sing] [ ] soft. A grand arch of cloud bounding the valley. Calm how profound. Trees in clumps on their patches of moraine top on sky Sky afternoon most exquisite blue One daisy Abundance of buttercups in mead [meadows] at foot of Lyell gls [glaciers] & granite bosses
