Mounds cushioned with Elastic [Selaginella] & tufted [bordered] with rock forms, & Larkspur & golden [Eriogonum]. Cushioned with Elast [Elastic] Club moss or with only granite sand between the flrs [flowers]
A wondrous little shrine first sprays from base of precipice, descends keeping close to wall in wh [which] it has not yet had time to wear itself a channel Therefore on the [smooth] wall it spreads wide into several shrines then meeting a level bench [waits] again, lisping [pulsing] trilling tinkling cascades a net work of fairy lace Here it refreshes a mat of club moss
57 here a clump of ferns or grasses that have found a standing [place] on the wall. Or it flows proudly through a little garden known only to the birds & winds composed of a few lilies & ferns etc upon a kind of terrace 20 ft up on the solid wall is one of the dearest of these gardens wh [which] can be reached by going a few yds E [east] of the cascade where a seam in the rock [slopes upward to] leads to it by an easy slope the seam terminates about 6 ft above the garden but it is easy to jump down & as a dense sod of grass & [Eupatorium] grows here it is easy in returning to pull oneself up again. The garden is composed of Soap root & blue [Broader] Larkspurs A few tufts of [ferns], pel mucro [pellaea mucronata] & Gymno [gymnogramm]. Echeveria grasses with slender purple panicles mosses delightfully bossed [ ]
