84 Bird seemed charmed or inclined to be as I lay wedged in gray rock neath a juniper He came nearer & [nearer] looking with now this eye [now] that I [thought] I might charm him into my mouth like a snake so I [showed] teeth & tongue in a terrible way but I charmed not [ ] [sketch] Woodchuck likes songs sharp angled like the rocks he dwells in

85 1st brow El Cap [Capitan] & crest Eagle Cliff then cone of Starr [King] & S [South] Dome these like islands of silver [snow] on the ice ocean as it swelled & heaved Catching the thin [fountain] light of the cold sun [shining] Birds on Hoff [Hoffman] [snow] at meal of insects spread on white clean cloth No slaughter house dirt no blood. So also snakes swallow without [putting] to pain of killing
