Panga and arrived in the afternoon. A small town in a lovely picturesque bay. Distant mountains in sight over low sandy shores. Many great baobabs along the bluffs, mingled with mangoes, etc. houses beneath some of them, and gardens. A few in the town. Shipped large quantities of cotton. Loading all night. Feb. 5 Sailed for Mombasa at 8:00 A.M. Expect to arrive about 2:00 P.M. Fine breezy morning but the weather equatorish. Arrived at half past two. Went to Grand Hotel, airy, but dusty, distant about three miles from the port. The road very beautiful. Passing through an almost pure forest of baobabs. Town on a coral plateau. No soil. Hundreds of grizzly, stunted but huge trunked trees. A few of the branches are in leaf on account of drought, but they all hold on to life. A few on good soil at dare s Salaam were abundantly
