At the station, although so late in the evening, I found Mr. Fletcher’s automobile awaiting me, and in a few minutes I was in his palatial home, glorying in my triumphant success in seeing the grand forest of Southern Chili. Nov. 24. Went to the Botanical Gardens, and in the evening addressed Dr. Rice’s scholars. Nov. 25. Started in the afternoon for Los Andes. Arrived at 10:30 P.M. and stayed overnight at the large hotel. No. 26. Started at 6:20 A.M. across the Andes. Wonderful ride through tunnels and around innumerable mountain sides. Our short train hauled by two locomotives specially fitted for the steepest grades and shortest curves. One of the locomotives was attached to the rear of the train. Arrived at Mendoza at the foot of the range about 10:30 P.M. Changed cars and continued journey to Buenos Aires.
