band playing, the crowd hurrahing. A lot of girls in white, with huge hats and hobble skirts, etc. All the French notions plus Portugese. Colored like flamingoes. Politics more intensely displayed than in U.S. which is saying very wildest stuff imaginable. Color of Amazon water distinct all day. Dull black clouds evening. Bright stars at night, except around horizon. Slept pretty well. September 27. Fine clear morning. White fluffy-edged cumuli, dull pale haze around horizon. Lovely blue above. The sea white-capped sparsely. Colored slightly with the finest of the Amazon mud particles. Ship pitching. One pure white bird skimming through the even curly-topped swells. Fine ship, built in Scotland. With cadaverous very un-Skotch-flavored food. Dish of yellow, slimy, ointment-like stuff, perhaps intended for custard, instead of porridge, at 6:00 A.M. with coffee and cakes. Breakfast at 10:00. Lunch at 1:30. Dinner at 5:00. Supper at 8:00. All these meals made up of stuff deadly undesirable.
