of vessels from far countries. August 16, 1911. Out of sight of land since 3:00 P.M. yesterday. Last evening heavy, leaden, gloomy clouds wondrous full of lightning sweeping along the eastern horizon. Very little thunder heard 16th. Sea form purple or violet. Low swells intermingled with hollows of innumerable wavelets. Wonderful cloud mass. Jet black, light blue, white and yellow smoothly brushed, or mackerel clouds, back of it. A strange sky. Most day muddy dingy clouds, cumuli, like those of tropics.
