24th The days journey to Redwood meads [meadows] Grand gardens & forest views up the flowery ava [avalanche] swept slopes from Mineral King, into Timbers Gap & down derry down thru magnifica & Sug p. [Sugar pine] into long stretch of Sequoia mostly on right side of the big creek at 500 ft ab [abundant] meads [meadows] on both sides of trail nearly continuous to Redwood Meads [Meadows], a mile or so, Fir group slender shafts, rich brown In & around the mead flats, fine young exquisitely modeled hopeful aspiring group along margin of mead [meadow] with noble old patriarch [over the] height back of them [ ] extensive form. Meads [meadows] made by lrg [large] dam, a good many great trunks still visible in tall grass sedge Veratrum in flr [flower], lilies, geranium, Cone flr [coneflower] with large lvs [leaves] somewhat serrated, mint Hosackia goldenrod habenaria castilleia all in flr [flower], dogwood, willow black currant, gooseberry

3 young Seq [Sequoia] 15 to 10 feet high with clusters of last season’s cones to ripen this fall These saplings not vigorous, yellowish on acct [account] of wet soil
