Camped at mouth of grand Arroyo. Arrived from Soda Springs about 3 PM started 11:30 on horseback
[Note: Below the sketch are a few words] East side, up Kern [ ] 9th July All resting. Merry camp fire. Shepherd dog stub puzzled & alarmed at rough wild play. P. contorta [Pinus contorta] just out of flr [flower]. Fine Clr [color]
10th Fine clds [clouds] most of day. Rain about [4] on heights – a few drops below. Spoke on gls [glaciers] at camp-fire.
11th Up to Moraine Lake. A big magnif [magnificent] toward head of side-canon Mtn [Mountain] pine, Juniper, & few Balfour, v. [very] beautiful gardens along stream Lily, Yarrow, Columbine, Calochortus, Polygonium, Godetia, Monardella, dwarf silver lupine Helianthemum Minuarta [Eunanus] On the fine spacious Upper Funston Meads [Meadows] surrounded by spry tall contorta. Bryanthus [vaccinum] Kalmia at lake wh [which] lies at rim of grand Arroyo separated from it bar of gl [glacier] [moulded] gray granite, the lower side by broad massive mor [moraine]. Lake ½ m [mile] l [long] not deep has no inlet or outlet, fed by winter snow & seepage from mor [moraine], fine smooth [bottom ] near shore, the scattered gl [glacier] boulders shoved out into a rampart by expansion of ice in spring. Fine view of Mt Whitney from W end 100 ft above lake & the ridges, El [elevation] of Lake 9400. So [Some?] trout planted.
To upper camp from wh [which] ascent of [Kaheirns] pk [peak] was made thru fine
