show. Budwells and Cunninghamia, and various palms, especially this one. Got permission from Chief Steward to stay aboard this evening in the stateroom I have been occupying. Dressed for dinner and at bugle found I was the only person present, everyone gone up town, the place above all others I would avoid. How much we differ. Slept fairly well. Rose at 6:00 this morning. September 22nd. Got two cups coffee from my room boy, had my trunk and satchels brought up, got 2 Malay boys to carry them to carriage and found way to the Lalpoora. Had good accommodations assigned me, and have enjoyed the day and the meals and the strange busy scenery. Tasted 2 new fruits, the durian and papuan, both delicious. Also new orange, very thin paper rind, pale green, taste sweetish, not bad or very good. September 23rd. Started last evening at 6:00 P.M. for Calcutta, beautiful shores. Warm, showery, strange lights on the sea, yellow green of many tones. Weather threatening. Captain decides to take outside passage. September 24th. Very dark, sooty strange morning. Squalls and rainy. Arrive Penang at 9:30, pouring rain, very difficult to get ashore. Start for Rangoon about noon. Dark stormy night. Warm, clammy.
