51 camp. a grand crash of reverberating thunder. a light shower. trail follows stream about 1 1/2 ms [miles] v [very] rough willowy then turns to right N. [north] |o| [between] dome, small & main wall of big mtn. [mountain] another mile then makes sudden drop of 150 ft [feet]. here under 2 big junipers left horses & were free fine views of Whitney mtns [mountains] down the stream. The trail on leaving main stream follows a v [very] small stream to dome notch where left horses. 8th remained in camp & did [naething] but sang danced & made mighty merry. told stories. rainy lay under

52 trees. 9th pack train not in sight, go on towards Whitney. a fine calm morning. Gentiana arctica on camp mead. [meadow] N. [north] v. [very] ab. [abundant]. Aug 9. East F.
