Left home Jan 13, 9.45 P.M. 14th. Morning on board plain fog-covered, sandy, desolate looking Fresno and Bakersfield. Miserable looking stunted vines. White oak (lobate) in Tehachape [Tehachapi] pass. Sabine pine struggles along the road; good telling feather growth on mtn and hilltops. Deposits of ancient drift on hills> El of summit, 4000. Queer straggling forest [ ] Yucca arborescens for miles (40?) from summit (near). White Mohave desert, level lake basin. A perfect cloud of dust filled car, hid train. Pleasant companion, Mr. Flagler of NY. 15 Arrived 5:10 A.M. at Williams. Elevation 6800. Yel pines, open woods, volcanic
