July 18/01 At Porcupine Flat Contorta flrs [flowers]not yet open El[elevation] 8100. Now at White Wolf Meadows. Patches of snow at meads[meadows] in the forest shadows around & above White Wolf. A mile or two above the mid[middle] Fork Bridge [Montia] begins along the stream & under the shade of the mtn [mountain]side at El[elevation] of 6500 here Contorta also, [ ] discharged. Fine [spans] of mtn p[pine] on summit of Tioga crossing of Yo[Yosemite] Crk [creek] basin. Fine patches of timber in Yo Crk basin
especially magnifica, only contorta at crossing of crk
Porcupine Meads frosty this morning sheets of rim ice frozen [ ] etc Too cold for mosquitoes. No trouble at this elevation except in heat of day about still places by streams.
The loveliest calmest weather in all O where are mtns so hospitable roomy exhilarating divine the dawn a gentle imperceptibly deepening pale yellow light so pale almost white. Then the silver lances of the sun come streaming thro the [ ] pines streaking the round spots & strips of emerald lawns. Not a leaf stirring The sky all even pale blue without hint of cld too beautiful to be seen. The needles of Contorta shiny as you look toward the sun only spider threads show motion in their waving shining [illegible] also white silvery [spiritualized] flecks sailing floating [turning] shining like [sunllins]
The sun an hour or two high seen thro Contorta tree a white glow with innumerable [small drawing of the sun]
