[Sketch: From Dutch Harbor 10 [miles]?] [Captain] Humphreys left us to go to Bristol [Bay] on Excelsior. We left at 10 A.M. Beautiful [mountains] on our right going through the pass. Lovely [yellow] green cover on even the rough pillars on [mountain] fronts, resulting from dyridation. Soon run into fog, good course laid, whistle blowing. Will have to anchor when we come to island. tangle 100 [miles] [distant] if fog does not lift. Solid fog. Dropped anchor at 10 P.M. Started again at 3 A.M. July 18. Fog lifted, fine morning, had to slow down only once for a belt of fog. Fortunate yesterday while the fog blotted out all the grand volcanic scenery that it was already in our minds having so clear a view 10 days ? previously going [West]. We had delightful sunshine all day going thro’ [yellow] green isles past Pavalof, etc. to Sandy
