[Sketch: [Opposite] Homer] Cook Inlet on river. Thought the birch there the same as [Eastern] canoe birch; has white bark, etc. Said he was [very] glad to meet me, had heard of, etc. Started about midnight but got aground after going about a ship’s length. [July] 5th. Ship lying over on gravel bed, nearly rolling us out of bed. At 10 A.M. got afloat. Expect to get off about 9. The day is perfectly lovely, balmy, not a cloud in the sky. [Temperature] 73 in shade. The party of lavishly armed and attended got no game whatever of the kind sought but healthy exercise and a fine waterfall and flowers, etc. [July] 6th. Started for Unga of the [Sketches: Iliamna. Redoubt. From Kichemak Bay. Iliamna from 20 [miles] farther [South]. Redoubt]
