botanists and ornithologists at midnight at Kukak bay on the peninsula. Here the big game party got off on launch, gun-laden for war, going up inlet then afoot. Took light canvas boat and all the packers. Nyak bay lovely green slope, white [mountains] of peninsula in distance; no trees; greenest of bright green emerald grass with alder. Started for Kodiack about 8. Steam whaling [company] have cannery, etc. here. The sail lovely; green slopes all the way to Kodiack through the northern strait and narrow strait between Raspberry Island and Spruce Island, Kodiack and Afognak islands. Spruce appeared [Sketch: 4th from upper - Serpentine]
