obliging. Met Oregonian reporter-Mr. La[u]rence. Got list of Harriman party & some of old Scientific Soc[iety] who got me to lecture 20 yrs ago. 30 Party arrived at noon- Mazamas went to station to welcome them. Keeler & I also. Met many of the club. John Burrougs[Burroughs] grabbed me in the crowd. “This is JM” etc. All rode up to Portland Hotel. Saw Brewer [William Brewer] on car. Hearty salute & introduction to [Mrs] H[arriman]- Started at 3 P.M. on steamer for Kalama River Very full. Banks submerged. Dense growth of maples. Got aboard the fine special train & arrived at Seattle about midnight Everything fine. Dined with Mr. Mohler [Adam L. Mohler] Supt O.R.&N.[Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company] 31 Sauntered about town most of day with John Burroughs Registered at Rainier Grand brunched there, & was interviewed by newspaper man who wrote queer notice of “Two famous men”. 31 Left on Geo. W Elder at 5.45 P.M. Cldy[Cloudy] not much sun. June 1. At Victoria early in the morning. Stayed 2 hrs after breakfast. Called on Anderson with Brewer. Were cordially received & shown about the fine building. Fine specimens of Sequoia G[Gigantea]. Rose wild just coming into bloom. The largest of wild roses fragrant like brier after rain.
