[water] rose lavender - sky at bottom blue - red purp[le] above 8 or 10˚ [degrees] wide W. glorious gold & purp[le] all shades on base of cloud horizontal, lilac, dark & pale. Island just before sunset loveliest dark purp[le] May 23 Left S.F. at 7.P.M. Found Mr Holobird who was going to Portland to meet Mr Harriman to buy a 75 mile section of RR [railroad] in S. Cal [Southern California] - a lively companion. Had much to say on R.R. [railroad] building. When buying ticket lady heard I was going on Harriman Ex[pedition] “What is the Ex[pedition] [Prof[essor] M[uir].] is going with Fortunate in having Chas Keeler charming comp[anion].
