Left Nanimo at 12.50pm today. Calm but smoky. The trip from here to San Francisco about 60 hours; at 7 stopped at Victoria and put Capt George ashore in boat. Aug 19th Sea calm as in the narrow channels. No land in sight all day. The long narrow winged gulls now following the ship. Followed us all the way up from San Francisco to Victoria but do not go into the narrow inland channels. Other species do, [but not the albatross] Wonderful red lurid sunset last night. A smooth solid mass on mountains of Vancouver Island like a lake of lava. “That’s handsome” said Fillmore.
Aug 20th Sea still smooth, Nobody sick. Weather dull, gray inclined to fogginess. Expect to reach San Francisco tomorrow morning at one or two oclock, then my babies.
