Had visit with old Dr. Chance while waiting at station for train to start for Cal; a rare character, hard tried of later with loss of property. Had to sleep in tourist car rather than take upper berth; plenty of air but very hard bed, no conveniences as if thoughtfully striving to make guests miserable to drive them into Pullman. July 23. Daylight at Roseberg; saw the celebrated Canon, basin of Umqua. Sugar p once more and few Douglas and yel p, orchards, etc. Table Rock, Pilot knob, etc., Range R val beautiful up the long zigzags of Siskyou mtns. Sugar p, yel p and Douglas, a few Libos here and small Madronas from Umqua to slopes of Siskyou, also hazel, spiraea, elder and Juniper; dry, volcanic and treeless between foot of Sisk and Shasta val. Klamath R not large stream, 50 ft wide. Pineclad hills in distance black with Jeffery.
