Photod very large twisted cedar 9-7 some leafy rounded like dumpg. hawstacks. In the pm turned into Hermit valley on upper Mokelumne, at 8000 Alt. A small hail storm on way down. Soon had glorious camp on edge of meadows among contorta, very large and fine. Aug 20. Fine clear calm light frost on meadow, some of contorta the heaviest branched and leaved have seen, one beautifu massive specimen 100 long 3-6 dia 10-8 circ. Perhaps 300 yrs old. One at camp on mead. margin 13-9 circ. Abies mag. and mtn hemlock close by Light and shade. A long string of meadows. Higher near head of Mokelumne. N.F. Lakes full fish - caught several trout near camp. Branch road leads to these meadows and lakes, used by campers to some extent. Crossed divide pm over Mokelumne and N F Stanislaus. Fine timber, a number of small lakes and large meadows. Large deposite of volcanic tuff capped with massive gray lava. 4 forks of Mkel. 3 short and cut of from the summits by overreaching Stanislaus. Saw 2 ouzels, tame and charmg. Had lunch on flat willowy fine gravelly shores. (sketch) Camped last evening at Bloods - an extensive meadow at 6700 clench fine timber. Many reservoirs on Stanislaus N.F. killed trees. Timber mostly yellow pine and contorta and silver firs, both kinds - Many campers here to cool. Met Mr. Blood and Dr Mc Laughlin. Lunched on lovely magnifica flat. Evecular, small stream, glorious trees, vegetation of garden spoiled by sheep - ought to be included in reservation. Saw carpodicus frontalis at Bloods much finer bird than housefinch. Larger chipmonk - Tamias phoenix common here - Many half grown mtn quail - Timber finer as we descend, Black oak and Libo come in together at 6000 ft. Sugar pine in all its glory at Ganders - one on edge of sandy flat 32ft2 in circ. a little over 10 dia 4 ft above ground. Has had head broken with lightening and gaind new head, still vigorous fine bossy limbs not in the least scrawny, very fruitful this year. Gardiner Basin lovely in lines of mead. and flat and compassing forested hills. Young Sugar and concolor very fine. Large Libo. Concolor 7 ft dia.
