Aug. 8. White morning. Camp at mouth of Ouzel creek 200 yards below foot of 2d grand cascade. Temperature of air 50o at sunrise. The roughest scramble up and down Ouzel creek for a ford one mile above mouth; fine sugar pines in that gorge, saw ouzel. Trend of Ouzel creek N S E Trend of main canyon above it E 8 S Trend of main canyon below it S 75 W Grand N wall all the way down from Deer Grove to Ouzel creek- Most majestic rock in angle at confluence of Ouzel creek. S. wall here beings to rise in grand and lofty forms nobly sculptured 2000 ft. high, beginning with the pointer which has a finger pointing to the grand cascades.
