January, Friday 18, 1895 Black weather & rain. Time for indoor work. Am plugging away making dolefully slow progress. At home on the Ranch, Alhambra Valley, Contra Costa County, Cali, January 19, ‘85 Saturday 19 Rain, wind, black weather with tedious monotony but it matters not as far as my fields are concerned. In writing scenery, I am in Alaska & the mind goes there with marvelous vividness. I see the mtns. [mountains] & the glaciers flowing down their gorges and broad shell-shaped hollows. Sunday 18 20 Dark. The rain clouds in wondrous depth & fruitfulness they seem marvelous that so much rain can be stored in the sky.
