Below the summit a few miles the road enters a Kind of Yo [Yosemite] vall down the sides of which the road descends in the most wonderful series of loops & tunnels & covered arches I ever saw- truly [wonderful] splendid little fall with a walled in stand point at head of it from jutting rock from which to view it. A small stream but much it made of [ ], seen from above. Fine colors. The matter dashed into coarse crystal like drops instead of spray. Other smooth falls on this vall (15 or 20 ms [miles] long). Grand groves of Chestnut trees on taluses. They grow on roughest rocks. Saw here evidence of grand earthquake taluses on grand scale boulders granite 50 ft dia [diameter] or more. Some formed before lingering gls [glaciers] melted as show[n] by form thus Marvelous vineyards on mtn sides. Some terraces only one or two rows, every little vine 22 staked. Mostly [whi] [fountain] white grapes. Some look like [lombardy] a few small bunches on each vine. Stopped Hotel Conradi. A fine [ ] looking place. Grand arches fine gardens court etc. [sketch: [gear]; [position] on ice; Lingering gl [glacier]; [position] taken after melting] Had fine cool room & sleep. Next day at 9 AM started by [diligence] to Calico on Lake Como. Arrived at 11:30. Took steamer from Minaggio around 1:30. Started back at 2:40. The famous Lake hemmed in by lofty sharp glaciated mtns [mountains] well deserves its praises as the loveliest
