17 all its mud deposited in the lake. The lake waters greenish blue in most places, takes the clouds in glorious reflections. From Geneva to Neufchatel a lovely ride over fertile moraines & along Neufchatel Lake on the base of the Jura. The town handsome. Had a good room at Hotel Bellevue. Next day Sunday. A grand ride to Bash through the Bermese Jura marvelous limestone scenery gorge endless series of short tunnels etc. weather hot passed through some broad table valleys rather dry looking on acct. [account] of sinking of rain & [streams] thro rifts & [rivers] in the [limestone] Arrived good time same evening at Zurich. Stopped at St. Gottard [Gotthard] Hotel. Next day hired a carriage for about 3 hrs. drove all round the town. A charming place on gentle hilly ground at the foot of Lake Zurich. Evidence of wealth taste & knowledge said to derive most from silk manufacture. Lovely

18 villas, sequoias etc. curious frescoing & tinting of exterior walls of houses. Italian like a magnificent views up the picturesque lake. Called on Mr. G. Catlin to whom had letter from Pinchof was politely received, wished I would have stayed longer. Museum [ ] [ ] Took steamer at 10:30 A M for [ ]? At head of lake. Lovely sail thence took cars for Chur. Glorious ride 12 ms [miles] along Lake Brandum, thence along glorious valley Yosemite like to chur. The valley flat broad & fertile 2 ms or so. The Rhine flowing turbid thro it. Walls of valley gray-like limestone, picturesquely cut & sculpted 2 to 4000 ft high Indian [ ] grass alfalfa apple & pear orchards on bottom, grapes on [ ] sides. Stayed at Steinbock [Steinbach] Hotel good but rather dear. Chur in a queer old place narrow winding streets [ ] of stone plastered over. Arched [tunnels] opening to courts old cathedrals & castles & queer [places] many O.
