[ 5 ] in size equal to Merced , flows with rapid current gray & roaring with abundance of mud , sand & boulders Current to the inlet through the mor [moraine]. It issues from mor at point about 1 m [mile] below front of gl. Part of the trees grew on ledge near the S. end of the basin. Most of the stumps lean in the direction of flow of present Stream showing that the waters that carried the sand in wh [which] the trees [grew] were buried came from the same dir. The location is sheltered [one] & here a fine grove flourished for at least 2 generations as the decaying trunks beneath the roots of good sized stumps show. A few were decaying at heart when overwhelmed others [sound] but all the breaks determined by weakest spots. 00040
