obtained a specimen of a very rare and interesting fish. Oct. 18th. After leaving Oonalaska we had one good day, fair wind and calm water, then nine days of head wind amounting to a gale part of the time, which tossed and rocked us about until everybody was tired out and sick or half sick. Water coming over the decks in solid masses, making it impossible to get exercise. Since then fair winds or calm. We are now within 400 miles of San Francisco, and hope to get in by Thursday noon, the 20th, making a very long passage.
