This morning left the vessel in the launch at 5 A.M. to go a few miles up the river to search for fossils. Found a large tusk and several pieces of fresh, well preserved one which had been brought down the river some few miles. The natives informed us that we would find plenty of bones round that point, indicating a point of a mountain 6 or 8 miles distant. We found the river too shallow for our large boat, and as we were ordered back by 12 M. we were compelled to give up our intention of going to the deposit. There is a small settlement here – seem poor. A child had died under the strange circumstances, which frightened them so much
