peninsula. Discovered much ice in veins and masses of various shapes in low tundra. Nearly level, 40 ft. high and with lakes and pools, showing a tight frozen subsoil. Abundance of good peat. Large tusk at base of silt bluff. Large flocks of Ptarmigan. Beaver-gnawed alder. Returned at 12 midnight. Very cold all day, with snow-fall on the adjacent mountains. 11 Sep. Mild tranquil day. 46o M. On board all day. The Corwin sailed from Chamisso I[sland] this evening back to Elephant Point, intending to start early tomorrow morning to make further examinations of the ice formations. 12 Sep. Started at 5:30 A.M. with 6 men
