Bits of pale blue sky A.M., with rain in the morning and fog P.M. Water dull slaty gray or black. Yesterday bright dark blue, then pale green like glacier water. Sep. 4. Foggy, partially cleared at 10 A.M., when we hoisted kedge and proceeded on our way. Came to anchor again at 8 P.M., steering past Pt. Hope down Kotzebue Sound. Mild, 45o, calm, gray, sleepy day. A gull now and then the only life. Sep. 5. Left anchorage at 5 A.M. Dull, semi-rainy, with now and then a sloppy snowflake. Temp. nearly all day 45o. Foggy at times. Land came in sight about noon, clear and distinct at 3 P.M. The Mulgrave hills, knobby and conspicuous. Refreshing to see land once more, and to find out one’s whereabouts. Anchored off Cape Krusenstern at 9.
