Aug. 8th Cloudy with slight rain sprinkle and a few sun-glints. Temp from 41 to 45. Left Wankarem at 5 A.M. and steamed close as possible along shore to within sight of Cape N. 6 P.M. Then put the Corwin on here course once more to the S. end of Wrangel Land. Now, 10:50, we are speeding gaily along with a stiff fair wind (S.E. nearly) at 7 ¾ knots an hour. Hope we may effect a landing. Saw large “pods’ of walruses on ice this morning, also many in the water, the young on their mothers’ backs. Passed some large masses of clear green and pale blue ice from ¼ of mile to 2 miles long. At 11 A.M. landed opposite a group of huts that we discovered on a hill 4 to 5 miles back from the shore – two groups 2 miles apart. About a dozen persons came to meet us, the most advanced having reached the shore before we landed.
