June 22. Sunny, warm. Left at 6 last evening. Mountains on N. of Norton Sound clearly visible this morning. Beautiful sunset at 10:45 –strange mirage, the disk constantly changing from one form to another, but always forms like those made in a lather, nicks and rings like those on fancy mugs and caskets. On the 23rd we were sailing along the north side of St. Lawrence Island against heavy wind. There was a rough sea and a clear sky, save on the island. I had a tolerably clear view of the most prominent portion of the island near the middle.
