16 Our goods blankets provisions etc lay in a [pile in a] rocky sandy hollow [in the terminal] on the morain [rock & sand] within a mile of the great terminal wall of the gl [glacier]. [wh [which] in sending off] & the ice bergs great & small rising & falling at intervals of 4 or 5 minutes kept up an almost continuous thundering while a few gulls flew about on easy wing or stood like specks of foam on the wave-washed shore. These were our neighbors [I was tired] After my 12 mile walk [I sat down on a box &] I ate a cracker [& pan of cheese] -- found that one of my boxes had been left on the S.F. steamer, but still have more than enough of everything Had 2 cords of dry wood Menzies spruce wh [which] we obtained at Juneau & wh [which] the captain (Carroll) kindly had his men carry to our camping ground. We set about piling the wood as
17 a wind break. Then laid a floor of lumber brought from Seattle by Loomis for a square tent 9 ft [feet] -x9x Then set the tent. staking firmly Then piled & packed our provisions clothing etc & made our beds. This work was done by 11.30 P.M. & still had good daylight lasting to this time. [Went to sleep] Slept in our swell [brand new] roomy [cotten] house [thinking] dreaming of [babies & wife etc] California home nest & the [ ] [bonny] wilderness of ice [at work] about us. June 25. Rainy. Kept count for a few hours of the number of bergs discharged [falling & rising] from snout. Then sauntered along the beach to the end of the crystal wall. A portion of the way dangerous the [moraine] bluff being capped by an overlying & advanced portion of the end of the gl [glacier]. & wh [which] melting sends down rocks occasionally. & masses
