Shasta Sep. 4th 1888. Arrived from Oregon this P.M. 5 o clock. Mtn [mountain] dwarfed & dry looking very little snow. The meadows half green half brown. The [late] asters in bloom & [Oemthera]. A few odd specimens of spirea. still in flower & blue meadow violets crategus [crataegus] lvs [leaves ] getting yellow the haws black & getting dry. Lovely views of the Mtn from the meadows—great spaces of hazy bluish lights. Heavy dew on the meadows & long shadows from the groves.
