[sketch: Islet [Tufted] [Burrard] Inlet.] burned forest on one shore (right) nearly all killed to summit from shore. One stone loose [ ] [rear] beach with [seedling] conifers. Even [bowlders] forest clad [Bur] Inlet.

In the dark woods primeval dark clouds day 10 A.M. hushed [aweing] sound of wood tops of tall cedars & hemlock, one with gray fibrous bark the other reddish & flaky. Hemlock with fine Yel [yellow] foliage—the young trees elegant drooping at tops so also those of cedar level topped in age lower branches dead & mossy ferns [aspidium] in [tufts] [rosettes ] the fertile [erect] the others spreading. 2 huckberries [huckleberries] red & black 8 to 10 ft h [high] [sal] pea green foliage— Sal [Gaultheria shallon] at 8 ft h. [for] glossy lvs [leaves] 2 to [5] inches l [long] 1-2 wide [slender] [leaning] stems.
