D. Lambert 534 Haight St. S. F. [San Francisco] Lincoln [Grammar] 5th near Market.
Most of stores closed. No meat got milk wh [which] soured. Mill hands dawdling in best clothes dull semi holiday [gentness] of men accustomed to routine hard work—evidently not at ease & not enjoying rest or idleness as they think they should. Camp of Washoe Inds. [Indians] Came up to see the 4th festivities gay calicoes, dawdle & louf, white perfect teeth, fat & careless work for whites on [farms] some went fishing.
Set sail with chocolate & sardines & sour milk added to stores. Marvelous reflections in calm mirror waters, trees & rocks flapping & walloping yet distinct in swells raised by oars. Colors emerald-pale
