Kaiser, 10 cottages Kirby. 10 cottages. Intends to build 6 more. Intended only for patrons of the house. Rubicon Pt. bold rocky butte above & below the water. Sailing close [pump] very exciting views of the bottom. Granite in massive slabs pines in few nooks well anchored gives picturesque effect. Noticed curious effect of shadow on slopes about the [ ] Where the trees were mostly wide apart & standing in chaparral. The shadow of each tree looked like a burned spot—not simply black—but [dingy] sooty looking producing a very marked effect. Emerald Bay. About 2 mil north—nearly closed by [ter: terminal] moraine. The sides formed by lat mors [lateral moraines] The left lat very striking well formed 3 or 400 ft high where joins the shoulder of the mtn. Timber with pine & spruce sparsely grayish slopes. Emerald Bay. Arrived at Kirbys 10 A.M. July 1st 2nd camp. Talked with Mr & Mrs Kirby both kind & intelligent. Fishing good in Bay 10 cottages built since June 1 intends to build 6 more. A charming retreat from lowland heats & constant cares. Fine rough tangled canon above watered by Cascade Creek which travels through rough rocky canon. Ferns [Allasbons Pollaca] Cheilanthes etc. dogwood alder willow [merogris] penstemen [confertus] etc. Spireas Pyrola. Lilies v ab [very abundant] white & small tiger.
