191 16th Sep [September] at Wrangell Lovely silvery satiny pearly day the view from the hill over the bay ravishingly beautiful & novel the water a mirror but white mostly the islands black with black reflection whole [form] outlined, then the blue [islands] beyond they also mirrored in front in own color then the glossy [satiny] clouds with dark purplish centers & bars of black [never] before saw 20 white a day so much subdued lustre x them of similar sufferings of their own & of the childs bitter [loss] in another world all in a perfectly natural way wholly unlike the vacant silent hesitating behavior of most civilized [friends] who seem [nonplussed] & awkward afraid to speak.
