48 white or purplish. Alder brushes & trunks gray reddish or black cones at right |_ [angle] to axis of branch. 4 in. long to [5]. [Sterile] half in long pale purple. sessile tree 40 ft high dwarfed at upper [limit] 11000 ft – none lower here than 8000. This is the most sustained in height & most varied in production of plants & [scenery] of all the interior basin ranges E of the Sierra Birch Creek – a fine stream 3 to 4 ft wide 6 in. deep flowing cool & noisily beneath Alders Birch & willow from a basin almost 5 miles long 2 wide & escaping through a [wild] romantic canon - (granite) to smoky val [valley] where it like all other streams in this sun beaten basin sinks tracing its path with struggling of green willows & sedges.
