The snow on the mtns [mountains] fell in lavish gl [glacier] abundance last winter [day &] storm succeeding storm day & night week after week [darkening] thickening the air & making it dark [ ] as Monday [ ] clothing the [passes] peaks & mt smooth [ ] covering rocks streams & shaggy [mtn] bushy slopes as well as the smooth gl [glacier] meadows with a deep bossy mantle [& shutting out the light] not to be [lifted] melted away [this year] until [past the middle of summer] the summer sunshine is more than half spent Few then lie in the warm Cal [California] lowlands who know the solemn impressive beauty of snowstorms on the mtns [mountains] when the [fountains] of the streams that descend through the woods to bless the [ ] valleys & plains are being filled.
