72 shines lovingly, & all is joyous life; & new flrs [flowers] are already planted on the flood [belt], showing natures [ ] [her] modes of working beauty & joy, yet how [stoic] we are to take her [ ] [her] [hints] Over [ ] all came floods of gl [glacial] ice [bringing] all landscape all forests & gardens with tender loveliness. We read our bibles & remain fearful, uncomfortably amid natures loving destruction her beautiful deaths. Talk of immortality after a [whole] day in the woods we are [already] [immortal] When is the end of such a day? Every sq [squirrel] puts us to shame. No rankness in flr [flower] stalks lushness in the grass. No fiery tropic splendor, but warm mellow lights in rock & tree & mead [meadow] the [ ] [ ]
73 Subdued tones grey [transparent] [shade] diff [different] kinds of shadows [ ] one tree or more. Walking these [woodland] [ ] boughs or [ ] plains or great [rods] paths we find ourselves following deer & [bear] Fragrances of that most beautiful of [mountain] carpets in open [places] where the pines stand well apart & here is the [snowflower] gone to seed yet wonderful in [crimson] color & [ceanothus] [still] [in] [bloom] sweet hawthorn [fragrance] we are [heated] on open hills [soon] descend valley where water [running] cool [amid] saxifrages – [brawling] [pouring] calmly [ ] now the [snow] [ ] done. From pool to pool over boulders once flood rolled & am [enjoying] the flood music [once] [again] for it is all well [within] channels of rock & boulder [ ] & stranded [battered] logs & from the west an amber flood enough for [every] tree, & who will say [not] perfectly glorious [kine] [Godful done].
