finest I have ever seen anywhere They are not much wooded but there is a grand coloring of crimson gold from the dis[illegible] red granite and a lovely green [beige?] from the moss and fern c[illegible]y clustering in every nook and crevice. I wish I could send you all the specimens I have gathered but I can only compress a few with my envelope and as most of the parcels I send to California miscarry I do not feel much courage about it. It is quite true that I some times pine for sympathy and appreciative souls, but there are none here, all money getting men and drawing room ladies who can not [illegible] I can have any other object in traveling fourteen thousand miles to Hong Kong than to lounge on a sofa and#9171 [2][jaw?] myself and grumble. They dont understand me and I certainly do not comprehend them. It is strange that at first wherever I go people are quite delighted to have me as a great worlds wonder, but then the very qualities which have brought me out more than themselves are the very ones they dislike. and the first thing they find amiss is that I differ in many things from themselves. Even that so called "Pacific Churchman" cant leave me alone, he wants me to think and act as he does. He is one of the [illegible] of "Z[illegible]ta" have you read any of them. They are very funny One says that your character is all "bosh" and only exists in my imagination. I should like to tell him that you had an existence in my heart as well! Only fancy the Pacific Churchman" hearing that.. I have been writing articles lately in h[illegible][3]
