Oakland, Cal.(Cor. 11th & Webster Sts.),July 10, 1870.Dear Mrs. Waterston,A letter received some weeks since from Charles Sanderson sent me at once to San Francisco in search of you. I heard that you had left, and only last Friday of your temporary absence -- my first informant stating that you had returned to Boston. I trust it is not too late for us to meet.Should this find you in the Yosemite Valley, on your return from the High Sierra, I wish it might make you acquainted with one who is as substance to the shadow of whatever is lovely and of good report our friend Charlie is. Dear Charles! so like a disembodied spirit, so kindred to the shining ones, here in the lower world has never been able to show what he is. My friend of the Yosemite has kept so close to Nature that her blood, her health, her spicy aromatic flavor fills him, and he knows all your paths. He is of Scotch descent-- his name is John Muir, and he is with Mr. Hutchings. You will find the rest of him for yourself. It is a grief and a triumph of self-denial that I am not this moment in the glorious valley, where it would be most pleasant to meet you.
